Unit 302

Unit 302. Principles of keywords and optimisation.

Task A.

1. Define the meaning of the term Search Engine optimisation (SEO).

SEO is where you go through the process of improving your website in being easy to find in the search engines, this is done by using keywords and key phrases which the search engine will pick up on and recommend your website to searchers.

2. Explain, giving two reasons, why Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is important to a business.

1. Firstly, for a business to get views on its website it needs to be within the first few pages of the search results, as this is where people look. So it is important your website is optimised to that the search engine can pick up on key words and recommend your website to the relevant searches.

2. Your website will contain more relevant information because you've had to optimise it so its all relevant to your company, also search engines don't recommend websites they think are spamming so you cant repeat yourself, so it makes the quality of your website much higher, overall getting more visitors and then customers!

3. Briefly explain the terms 'organic' and 'paid' search results.

The term 'organic' search results means when your website is naturally occurring on the search engines because of it ranks your business' website, this is normally done by indexing parts of your website.

The term 'paid' search results means you pay the search engine to display your website when people search online.

4. Describe the terms 'Pay-per-Click' and 'Pay-per-Impression'.

The term 'Pay-per-Click' means you get paid each time your website is clicked onto, being very good for a business as it can track exactly how many people are viewing their website.

The term 'Pay-per-Impression' means being paid to display an advert a certain number of times on your website, generally rates are per 1000 impressions.

5. Describe five factors that need to be considered as part of a Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) plan.

1. What your customers are searching for in the search engines.

2. How you'll use tags in your plan of optimisation.

3. Be aware of how search engines rank a website down to the keywords used.

4. Have keyword phrases instead of just keywords.

5. Know what keywords and keyword phrases people are using the most that are relevant to your business.

6. Define the meaning of the term 'keyword' .

Keywords are the things people type into the search engine bar to find what they are looking for.

7. Explain five factors that need to be considered when identify keywords and/or keyword phrases.

1. You want to be using keywords that your customers use and people in general so you have a good idea of how to optimise your website.

2. Understand the competiveness of certain keywords and phrases with other companies, you want your website to stand out so do your research so you use the best keywords for your business.

3. Research into how often certain keywords are used in the search engine in your area, so you can get a good idea at what keywords will work well and which ones wont.

4. Make sure that all spellings are correct otherwise other results will be found.

5. Make sure use relevant keywords to your business that will nicely link back.

8. State six places on a website where a search engine looks for keywords and/or keyword phrases.

1. URL

2. Page description

3. Heading

4. Content

5. Page title meta tags

6. Alt-tags on images

9a. Describe two ways in which link building can help the search engine ranking of a website.

1. Search engines look for websites that are linked to social media pages which are relevant to the search, meaning that it will be higher up on the search engine list.

2. If you link you social media platforms to your website then google will recommend your website to others because of the link through social media.

9b. Describe two ways in which link building can hinder the search engine ranking of a website.

1. Too many links can make the search engine think you are spamming which doesn't get high search results as they avoid anything they may think looks like spam.

2. Google might think that you have irrelevant links if you use too many which again will make you less likely to be recommended by any search engine to its searches.

10. Define the meaning of the term Social Media Optimisation (SMO).

Social media optimisation is when you use of keywords when engaging with their audiences.

11. There are factors that can positively and negatively affect how a search engine ranks websites. Describe three positive and three negative factors.

Positive

1. Good keyword and keyword phrases used.

2. Relevant links made with social media accounts.

3. Tags used, especially in images such as Alt-tags so that google picks up on the optimisation within the website.

Negative

1. If it thinks the website is spam because of repeated use in links.

2. Repeated use of keywords and keyword phrases can make search engines not recommend your website.

3. If the website isn't updated often.

12. Explain by giving two reasons why Social Media Optimisation (SMO) is important in a business.

1. It attracts the right kind of customer through engaging with them and getting to know them personally.

2. Get feedback off of your customers through engagement on your social media platforms which can overall help with the business improving in areas needed.

13. Explain with one example for each, how search engines include the following social media tools/channels in their results:

Social networking

Is great for linking back to your website which is something search engines look for, so they can find more relevant information for their users.

Videos

Video use is great for getting high up on search engine results because its rich engaging media and people love that kind and are more likely to view it. Videos can appear in the general results or in the YouTube/video results section.

Blogs

These are great when it comes to relevant information about a business as it has text but also can have images and videos again engaging the customers and getting more views and business for the search engines.

Forums

A great way to engage with customers, search engines love to encourage relevant engagement and will recommend forums to people to do just so.

Social bookmarking

Great for remembering useful websites as then google will remember what you've shown interest into and will recommend other websites later on in your searches.

14. Compare two ways in which Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) for a website differs from Social Media Optimisation (SMO).

Completely two different things, SMO is more about the engagement with the audience on social media to get a report with people and SEO is the encouragement of tags, meta tags, links and other ways to get more people onto your websites. SMO is a lot more personal, whereas SEO is more general optimising your website so it can be the best and get the most views on the search engines.

15. Define the meaning of the term Mobile Optimisation.

Its the process of making your website suitable for using on mobile devices.

16. Identify three ways how Mobile Optimisation differs from Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).

1. Specific meta data.

2. Different keywords and keyword phrases are used on mobile websites.

3. Mobile sites will need to be more simple that desktop websites as the screens are smaller and the pixels are less.

17. Explain two reasons why Mobile Optimisation is important to a business.

1. People use their mobiles a lot more, and can still use them when on the go, so  having your website optimised for mobile use will reach more customers.

2. More and more people are getting mobile devices compared to desktop.

18. Describe, with three examples, how to optimises a website for viewing on a mobile device.

1. Simplify your content so it doesn't take too long to load onto the mobile device.

2. Shorted keywords used.

3. Submit your site to the mobile directories.

19. Give two reasons why keywords and/or keyword phrases for a mobile website might differ from those of a non-mobile website.

1. Keyboard limitations on mobile devices can mean you cant do some keywords.

2. Your audience on your mobile websites may be different to those using you normal website and so different keywords would be appropriate, as in general younger people use mobile devices and will use different types of keywords and keyword phrases.

Task B.

A report of Heirlooms Ever After.

Five keywords/ keyword phrases that would be good for the business.

1. Bridal

2. Wedding headdress

3. Wax headdress

4. Jewellery

5. Brides accessories

The monthly search volumes of the above keywords.

For one of the above keywords mentioned, screen print using three different search engines looking up that keyword with the top three organic results.

I used google, Bing and yahoo for my three different search engines, and these are the results I got by using the keyword phrase, 'wax headdress'.

All results are organic and came up without having paid ads or paid the search engines to advertise their website higher up in the results.

From one of the search results use three websites and identify three ways in which the keywords/ keyword phrases are implemented.

I be using websites from the Bing search engine.

First website: www.hitched.co.uk

We can see the use of the keyword phrase 'wax headdress' throughout this blog, and fragments of the phrase which links with it all, especially the keyword 'wax'. By using the keyword in the blog in a number of places allows the search engine to pick it up and recommend it to searchers.

Second website: www.etsy.com
In the product description and title they have used the keyword phrase 'wax headdress' which the search engine picks up and adds it to the list of recommended websites for the audience searching, using it in the title is very affective as this is what is seen first and it is in bold for the customer to pick up on quickly.

Third website: www.pinterest.com
This is a image of a wax headdress and the image has been tagged and named both using 'wax' and 'headdress' which links back.

Review the keywords chosen and suggest one way of using the keywords better.

By doing research on Google Adwords, you can see which keywords are the most popular in getting more visitors, by doing this you can choose the perfect keywords to include in your website which is relevant to your business, so for example a good keyword for Heirlooms is 'bridal' as this attracts brides to the website because this is a common word that audience uses in their searches.

Create a link building plan for the website of the chosen business. Include three ways of creating links and timescale for action.

1. You can do In-linking which is where you drive your audience traffic from one website to other website or social media platforms by informing them on the website. This can happen quickly but it will take time to get your page views up.

2. Cross linking, connecting websites to each other and social media platforms so they all link back to each other.

3. External linking, getting highly ranked websites linked with yours to improve your credibility.

Explain three ways in which the selected keywords and/or keyword phrases can be used to listen and engage with an audience on Social Media.

1. By using certain keywords and keyword phrases on social media, you can attract certain customers.

2. This is good for engaging with the right kind of audience, as they might want more information about your business, and by using keyword you can allow them to come and visit your social media page.

3. Keywords can also inform your audience about certain offers, new stock etc.

Non-mobile website report with three changes to make the website more optimised for use on mobile devices.

http://heirloomseverafter.wixsite.com/heirloombrides

This is a website I made for Heirlooms, even though it functions as a mobile website, there are quite a few improvements that need to be made.

1. The website name, heirloom brides disappears on the mobile devices, leaving a blank space where the title would be.

2. The sliding images on the front page isn't central in the middle and looks unprofessional which can be easily changed by aligning it to fit on the mobile devices screens.

3. Lastly, just like the title is missing on the home page it is also missing on all the other pages and so this would need to be changed.

Unit 306

Unit 306. Creating and optimising content for the web

Task A.

1. Define the meaning of the term online profile.

An online profile contains text/bio, images and other types of media. You can have personal profiles or business profiles. So for a business' profile it could have a logo that represents the business and the name of the company. Whereas a personal online profile could include a profile picture and a status update.

2. Give two examples of how personal and business profiles are different.

1. A business isn't a profile about one individual, rather it represents the company and everyone in it, whereas a personal profile is just for that individual with a business or many.

2. A personal profile is controlled by that person whereas the business has to have someone else to update the profile and manage it, or even many people to upkeep it for the business.

3a. Explain three principles of optimising online profiles for search engine optimisation (SEO).

1. Such online profiles contain certain key words so that when the business is searched using a search engine it is found quickly and efficiently, which is key for getting more customers for the business.

2. Regularly updating the online profile is also very important as it refreshes the info so returning customers are still interested to find out about your business, people want to see new pictures and info to keep them interested which is important in maintaining your customers interest.

3. When optimising your online profiles make sure that you are not copying anyone else's work, using your own original text and images will optimise your page more, as search engines avoid what they think is spam.

3b. Explain three ways how online profiles should be optimised for search engine optimisation (SEO).

1. Images file names

2. Titles and bios

3. Tags and meta tags, which is a short description of the webpage that comes up on the search engine.

4. Describe four characteristics of an online profile.

1. Logos, an image that is used to represent the business and what people will recognise is your logo and brand appearance.

2. The brand and its values, so that customers are aware of what kind of service they will be getting when they have stuff to do with the business.

3. Bio, maybe short or long but a description of the business, information that makes the customer feel a little closer and personal to the company.

4. Images, great for bringing in new customers and keeping current ones interested with your business.

5. Identify one potential security issue and one potential privacy issue of an online profile.

A potential security issue is, identify thief, people using your personal information and pretending to be you.
A potential privacy issue is, that you cannot control everything everyone does, so there's the risk of people doing things without your authority.

6. Compare and contrast one feature of: blogs, micro-blogs and e-articles.

Blogs, micro-blogs and e-articles are used for different uses in giving people information. Blogs are like a personal diary that can be kept private or public, it can include information and is very personal to you. Micro-blogs are used more in giving content about news information. Finally an e-article is nothing like a blog and is for news articles and analysing the news.

7. Explain four reasons why it is important to use Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) in either a blog, micro-blog or e-article.

Your aim is to reach as many people as you can, so using SEOs will help you to do this as it puts your blog/micro-blog/e-article higher up in the search results. Search engines favour webpages that are optimised, meaning that it will be in a higher placing to other ones that are not optimised. When people key word search they will more likely come across yours if you have optimised your page. Lastly, web spiders visit fresher content on a regular basis.

8. Explain four ways how either a blog, micro-blog or e-article can be optimised for Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).

For a optimising a blog you can do many things to optimise the page. Firstly, you can include key words and phrases so that when people search key words your blog will appear in the search engine. Secondly, when using photos in your blog this alone optimises your page but using SEO terms and labels will give it extra optimisation. Lastly, using HTML headers will give your blog a boost on the search engine.

9. Explain two ways how each of the following can amplify and propagate news and information: blogs and e-articles, micro-blogs.

Blogs
1. Blogs are great for getting information across, as you can include a lot of text and images.
2. Blogs that are amplified with key words and tagged photos can reach more people as search engines look for key words in different subjects including the news and general information.

10. Identify five reasons for using blogs, micro-blogs or e-articles for a business.

1. It is an opportunity to engage with your customers/audience, giving the business a personal touch with their customers.

2. It is a great way to show off new products and write about them.

3. The more activity online the more visible a business will be online and with other people.

4. You can link relevant content with either your products or new information about the business.

5. Showing that your company has good values is important for the customers, so if they see you as a friendly, approachable person they are more likely to want to buy your products and also recommend you to their family and friends.

11. Analyse three advantages and three disadvantages of content syndication for either blogs, micro-blogs or e-articles.

Advantages

1. Having content syndication for your blogs will save you time overall, as the information that is on your website would automatically be found on your blogs if you had them linked up.

2. Because you are saving time you are also saving money, which for any business is a big bonus.

3. Once you have written something it will reach more people as it will be shared on all your linked medias.

Disadvantages

1. Search engines may negatively rate repeated articles and not recommend it to people.

2. Similar search engines may think because it has been repeated, it is some form of spamming, and in general people don't want to re-read information over and over again.

3. There's always the risk of your content reaching the wrong audience if it is being linked to various medias.

12. Explain three ways how engagement and sharing can be encouraged by using either blogs, micro-blogs or e-articles.

1. When writing a blog ask questions and ask for people to share it and share their opinions, making it very clear that you want a response from people and their friends.

2. Making sure that the topics you talk about are interesting and based around your business so it is all relatable for your customers.

3. Make the blog easy to share for people, mention about sharing on Facebook and twitter.

13. Explain four characteristics of well written content for the web.

1. Good grammar is used throughout the article, as this makes the text enjoyable to read as it is easy to follow.

2. Similar point as the first but good spelling is vital, as if not then it makes it look unprofessional.

3. When running a blog for a business you want to come over as friendly, so having a nice manner in your writing and a nice tone can have a big impact on making a article good.

4. Lastly, having your blog optimised for SEO.

14. Explain three ways how content written for the web could positively or negatively affect overall brand, perception and reputation.

1. Having poor grammar and spellings can have an impact on how people view you and the business, they may think you don't care and did a quick job that you weren't interested in. And if you want people to be interested in your business you have to be interested yourself so you have the passion about your products.

2. Business' must be careful when criticising other businesses or people, as this can cause arguments and people may then view your business as negative and not kind to other companies.

3. Linking to the first one, if you do use correct grammar and spellings and take the time to check then people will see you have taken the time to write the blog and have respect for your hard work.

15. Define the meaning of the terms: media and rich media.

Media is content that is written in HTLM on the internet/online.
Rich media is enhanced content which has got images, comments and videos included. Can also  include sharing buttons for sharing the content with others online.

16. Explain the importance of using the following on the web: media and rich media.

Media encourages sharing throughout online platforms as it links content.
Rich media is important feature as it encourages the audience to leave comments, share the page via buttons and overall encourage the interaction with the business and its customers.

17. Explain three ways how the choice of media and rich media can affect overall brand, perception and reputation.

1. All the media that you use for a business needs to be a certain level of quality, otherwise if the quality is poor then this can have a negative effect on the business.

2. If a business' media goes viral then you want to keep your good reputation and not loose it because of a mistake made that people have shared with others.

3. Any incorrect media choices can effect the brand and its name as people may get the wrong view on your business.

18. Explain three ways to optimise media and rich-media for Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).

1. Using tags and meta tags can optimise media and rich-media.

2. Descriptions

3. Image file names, so that the search engine looks through not only the text but the images to see if its relatable to what someone is searching for.

19. Explain two ways how media and rich-media can amplify and propagate information.

1. It can encourage more views on your page and more readers as it shares on social networks, overall encouraging people to share your media.

2. It can bring extra content and information about your business through images and videos.

20. Define the meaning of the term 'social bookmarking'.

Allows you to do the following: organise, store, manage, share and search for bookmarks and any resources online.

21. Define the meaning of the term 'tagging'.
Creating a label which is attached to another piece of information so that the pieces of information are linked, for example a image or file can be tagged together.

22. Explain three reasons why it is important for a business to use social bookmarking to share content on the web.

1. People can share them either publicly or privately to their friends.

2. People who are following your business can get notifications when you make a new bookmark.

3. Search Engine Optimisation for you webpages and social media platforms.

23. Explain two reasons why it is important for a business to tag content on the web.

1. SEO so that search engines can recommend your content which is tagged to people searching for certain things that are related to your content and business.

2. The business can classify their collections that suit them and make it easy to find them in the future.

24. Define the term 'Really Simple Syndication' (RSS).

It is a method which you can use to deliver frequently updated content automatically.

25. Explain two reasons why it is important to use RSS for distribution of content on the web for a business.

1. When you have published a new blog for example it does it in a standardized format to your other platforms.

2. Customers who are subscribed get a notification when you have updated a post or content.

26. Compare and contrast two social bookmarking tools.

The first bookmarking tool is google bookmarks, this is an extremely easy and efficient way to save websites and to organise them into different folders. Compared to other bookmarking tools, google bookmarks is very simple to use but is efficient in what it is required to do.

27. Identify five components of a content strategy for either blogs, micro-blogs or e-articles for a business.

1. Define what your content is going to be about, so for example Heirlooms content is always connected to bridal in some way.

2. Get a content calendar so if there are any events coming up then you write about them and have a schedule for your content.

3. Ask questions about your content or get others to look at your work and see if you can answer their questions and accept any changes that need to be made.

4. When it comes to traffic drive make sure that to make it more effective post your blogs at a similar time each week or day.

5. Similar to one mentioned earlier, get friends and family to have a look at your content and as of their opinions and how they would improve it, do this regularly so that your work is up to date and modified as much as possible.

Task B.

Below I have two examples of online profiles, the first one is a personal Instagram profile and the second is a business online profile.

The business online profile for Heirlooms is optimised using links back to the website. This is done by hyperlinking the images back to the website and the products. Secondly after each post/status the website is mentioned so customers know where to find the products.
Key words are also used for optimisation on this profile, two examples of key words used are; bridal accessories and headdresses. Search engines look for common key words used and then filter through to your profile which is what you want to achieve.

Improvements can always be made, so on the Instagram profile, if you wanted to get more followers or likes you could find what people like on your page the most and focus more on taking them kind of photos, secondly using hashtags will bring in more followers and likes, as this links your photo to a key words which people search for.
For the Facebook business profile, more regular posts would boost the amount of views, and including videos would also attract more people, as this is rich media which is interactive and interesting for any audience.

Task C.

Heirlooms is promoting a new headdress which is made using wax flowers.

Make a blog post helping promote the headdress.

Make a status update.

Next I posted a Facebook status which is a great way to inform people about any new information about your business, especially for promoting new products and ideas. When writing the status I used a key word which was 'headdresses' and I also optimised the post by linking it back to our main website which is something google looks for when choosing what to recommend to people searching.

Two suggestions to enhance the content using media or rich-media.

1. Include images which have tags so that they link back to either the website or another social media platform which has more information on the image.

2. Including videos which is appealing to people as it is interactive and more interesting, videos are becoming more and more popular in producing information for customers and the general public.

Four words to use to tag the content.

Weddings
Headdresses
Accessories
Bridal

Screen print of social bookmarking tool, with four websites you have bookmarked relevant to your business.

Above I have created a new bookmark for a wedding shops website, I entered in all the details which makes it easier to find in the future. I went and did this for three other websites as these are all relevant to our customers as they might want to see other local businesses or for our personal use in buying stock from a business.

Now I have four websites which are all relevant to Heirlooms, making it easy for me to find the websites for future reference and I also used labels to categorise them so I know exactly where to find them.

Screen print showing an Really Simple Syndication (RSS) reader with four pieces of relevant content for the business.

Using the tool Feedly I have found four relevant websites/blogs to the business and made a feed named 'bridal' so that I have everything organised for future reference.

Task D.

The two business I will be assessing are: Brides of Bakewell and Sassi Bride. Both are local businesses and are in the bridal industry. I'm going to look at both their Instagram social platforms for the next week.

Brides of Bakewell

Above we can see their six latest activities on their social media platform. All these posts have been posted within a week, so almost a post per day.

Sassi brides

Sassi brides six latest posts were all uploaded within three days a big difference compared to Brides of Bakewell, overall showing that Sassi brides are more active on their social media platforms.

Two similarities and two differences in each businesses activity.

Similarities

Both businesses are posting weekly making them active on both social media platforms, they are actually posting nearly every day or every other day.

They are both keeping in touch with their customers with liking photos, commenting and posting new posts with information. Overall showing me that both businesses know how important social media is for a business and can open up to more customers and having a personal relationship with them.

Differences

Even though they post regularly each week, Sassi brides does post more often, possibly because it is a bigger business.

Overall when it comes to activity they are both very similar.

Three improvements to the content of one of the businesses.

1. I would encourage Brides of Bakewell to include more rich media, such as videos, as Instagram supports one minute long videos which are very engaging to audiences of all ages. This would be great for getting more followers and customers.

2. Make some of the posts more personal, so that audience can connect to the business on a personal level, you always want a good report with your customers and including personal posts and updates can bring you can your audience closer.

3. Include more engagement with audience by asking questions or what everyone's wedding accessory is.

Screen prints showing how others mention one of the businesses.

Here on one of Brides of Bakewell posts, they have received a few comments and one uses the handle for brides of bakewell which links it all back to the business. This is good engagement with customers.

Task E.

1. Describe, giving two reasons, why it is important to recognise plagiarism.

Plagiarism is when you take someone else's work and you take the credit for yourself, overall using someone's work and not giving them credit. So it is important when online to give credit to the owner of the work, as it is going against their copyright laws and this can look ill-mannered on the business if they are using others work without permission and without giving credit, as it isn't professional.

2. Describe three principles why Intellectual Property Rights must be considered when writing content for the web.

1. Firstly, if you had written something then you wouldn't want anyone to copy your work, so the same goes for when you write content for the web you shouldn't copy someone's hard work as it is breaking their rights as the creator of that piece of work.

2. You should not use others written ideas for your own as this is going against their rights as the owner of the work and copy rights.

3. Google won't accept your work as a popular piece as it might look like spam if you have used other people work for your own.

3. Describe two principles of Copyright Law that must be considered when writing content for the web.

1. Not using others work for your own and then taking the credit.

2. You shouldn't be making money from others ideas and use them for your advantage.

4. Describe one way to protect each of the following: Intellectual Property Rights and Copyright.

Intellectual property rights can be protected by having it down in writing and making it legal, as this would make it easier to sue someone who uses your work.

Copyrighting a design is protection in itself but having your logo or designs trademarked can protect it even more.

5. Describe one implication of Copyright Law in other countries.

Taken to court for using others work illegally because they have a copy right stating you shouldn't be using it.

6. Describe two methods for discovering either plagiarism, breaches of Intellectual Property Rights or Copyright law.

1. Google will pick it up when looking for websites to recommend.

2. Your business becomes well known for a product or work and it is revealed that it isn't your original work.

7. Briefly describe the purpose of Creative Commons Licences on the internet.

A creative commons licence on your work allows you to decide what happens to your work and how people use it, as long as they give you the credit and follow what you want to happen to your work exactly.

8a. Identify each of the following Creative Commons License icons

This symbol stands for attribution, meaning you have to acknowledge the creator of the work and follow any requirements that they have set.

This symbol means you cannot use the work for commercial uses at all, meaning you cannot make money from their work.

This symbol means you can use the work but you cannot modify it in any way.

8b. State which licence can be used for commercial purpose and what action, if any, needs to be taken.

The first symbol with the person in the circle means you can use it for commercial use but you must name the creator/copyright holder and they might want to have commission from any products sold involving their work.

Unit 205

Unit 205

1.1.  Describe what website content and layout will be needed for each page.

On my website I will have five separate pages; home, gallery, about us, where to find us and contact us. The pages will be consistent in their design, they will all have a white background, header and buttons, as this will give a professional appearance to the website.

Home page
The home page will have the header and buttons to navigate to the different pages. It will also have photos of jewellery and headdresses, which will be displayed in a slide show format so that the images are showcased in a professional way. The images will have white backgrounds so it appears as if they are floating on the page, giving a minimalistic appearance.
At the bottom of the home page there will be the logos of social medias and have them all linked to the business' social media pages, so that customers looking on the website can easily visit them.

Gallery page
The gallery page will feature all the different photos that we have had done professionally, so it can help with the brides in choosing their hairstyles and what headdresses they may want. The images will all be high resolution and will be in a collage on the page. White boarders will separate the images giving a clean look to the page.
The gallery will have the same layout as the master page/home page, but the context will be different.
Lastly all the images will be ours to use as we own the copyright to all of them, and have the copyrights to the jewellery and headdresses, no images will be used off of google.

The about us page is an information page, it will include info on the business and who works there, it will include a picture and will be a nice feature of the website as it will give it a personal touch.

Where to find us page
This page again will be the same layout but with different information. It will include the address of the shop and phone numbers and emails so that customers can get in touch with us personally.

Contact us page
This is where the customer can fill out boxes and send a direct message to us, It will have a name, email, subject and message box that can be filled in and then sent to us. This is perfect for if people have inquiries that they want the answer to and if they want to place an order.

1.2. Plan and create web page templates to layout.

Below is my overall plan for the website, including just the basic ideas.

As shown above you can use the 'advanced styles' to create your personalized web pages, so you choose whether you want a boarder, shadows and colours. Then you can use the tool bar to insert your header and menu buttons.

1.3. Select and use website features and structures to help the user navigate round web pages within the site.

To create pages for your website, you click on the 'pages' option on the left hand side. Then you scroll down to the bottom and select 'add' then 'page'. This then creates a blank page which you can name and design. You can have an unlimited amount of pages.

After you have made all your pages and named them, you can click on the buttons and customize them to your style and liking. As shown above you can change the appearance with the colours, style and fonts.
This menu will be on every page so that you can navigate around the website easily without having to go back loads of pages to the home page.

1.4. Create, select and use styles to keep the appearance of web pages consistent and make them easy to understand.

The overall appearance that I want to achieve is a minimalistic fresh looking website. I chose a white background, black text for my header and menu buttons, and all spaced out evenly so it looks symmetrical, you can do this with the guidelines that appear when you are moving an object, so you can get the text central and inline with everything already on the page.
All my text will be black and in the font Jura and Open sans, as this will give a consistent look to the website.
For the gallery I have the photos with white boarders so that it looks as if they are floating against the main white background, giving a professional appearance which is clean and simple.

1.5. Describe how copyright and other constraints may affect the website.

Breaking any copyright or constraint rules wont be an issue for my website, this is because all the images I have used are my own or we have permission to use them from the photographers or other business'.

1.6. Describe what access issues may need to be taken into account.

A successful website is one which loads up quickly and has no problems with navigating around it or even finding it on the google search. By using smaller image files and only using the necessary amount of text, you can decrease the time in which it takes your website to load up. Why is this important? Because your customers want an efficient website which can do its job properly, if it takes ages to load up then interest will be lost and so will the customer.
My website loads up quickly as the images all appear soon after you have opened the website.
Navigating around the website is the same, all pages open quickly, so that people don't have to wait for the context to load.

1.7. Describe what file types to use for saving data.

All the images are saved as .jpg because they are photos and this type of file is perfect for images online as they are quick to load up and save.
As for any of the text used on the website, they aren't saved on any files, as I inserted the text using the website designer, so it gets saved with the website.

1.8. Store and retrieve files effectively.

All the images used on the website are named and placed into the correct files so that they are easy to find for future use.

3.1. Select and use appropriate testing methods to check that all elements of the website is working as planned.

If you type in the html that belongs to my website into the search bar then it comes up straight away onto the website on google search engine.
http://heirloomseverafter.wixsite.com/heirloombrides
Below I tested to see if it worked efficiently.

Above I have checked that when you open up the gallery page that all the photos are in line and the correct size. So I downloaded a extra app on google chrome called page ruler, which gives you guidelines and the sizes.

Above I have included another way to check that my website is working properly, it is called nimbus and it allows you to record you using your website to check that everything is working smoothly.

3.2. Identify any quality problems with websites and how to respond to them.

Overall my website works efficiently, the time it takes to load up is fast, the template and text is all lined up and readable. However I will keep working on my website to keep it up to date, uploading more photos on the gallery page, making sure they are the right size and resolution.

3.3. Select and use an appropriate programme to upload and publish the website.

I used the wix website software to publish my website as it allows you to this very easily. This then makes your website live for anyone to see and use.

3.4. Respond appropriately to problems to multiple page websites.

When you have websites will more than one page, you have a higher chance of having technical difficulties, as there is more that could go wrong. Something you need to make sure that all the different pages templates are the same, so that some aren't more too the left or not central like the others as this can be off putting to customers.
But if there are problems then taking your time to double check over the different web pages is a good idea, as when you're checking you could come across a little fault like a spelling mistake.

1. Getting direct discrimination because other employees think they are either too old or too young for the job role or that the employer wants someone who is mature or young.

2. Getting perceptive discrimination because others  may think because the employee is young they are not experienced enough for the role they have, but this is just because of what they observe and not what they know.

3. Indirect discrimination, so they employer not wanting a certain age working for them.

4. Harassment because of the employees age, can apply for younger employees or older  employees.

5. Victimisation of someone just because of their age, being singled out and being complained about because of their age and it not being true and fair.

Q12. Give three examples of age discrimination which may occur during the recruitment process.

1. The employer may not accept someone because they think they are too 'young'.

2. They could also not employee someone because they are too 'old' for the job but could have all the right qualifications and training for the job but are being discriminated by age.

3. Unless the job requires to have a good health, age shouldn't matter because the employer wants someone with 'energy' or 'enthusiasm'.

Q13. Give three examples of disability discrimination.

1. Being directly discriminated because of a disability either physical or mental, so being treated unfairly because of it.

2. Asking unnecessary questions that are on a personal level, unless some questions are required to be answered for the persons safety in the work place.

A five day week: 28 paid days off including holidays and bank holiday days.

A three day week: 16 paid days off for holidays.

A two day week: 11 paid days for holidays.

You basically times the amount of days you work with the workers entitled minimum 5.6 weeks off per year of paid holidays.

Q17. What is the minimum amount of uninterrupted daily rest that an adult worker should have over the period of a fortnight?

They should have 20 mins a day that are uninterrupted and 48 hours a week if they are working full time, so for example they have the weekend off and work only the other 5 days a week.

Q18. How much notice do you need to give to your employer when applying for annual leave?

You should give your employer double the amount of time you want to have off. So if you want a week off, then you should give your employer two weeks notice.

It is £88.45 for up to 28 weeks.

Q25. In what circumstances would an employee not qualify for SSP?

If an apprentice has worked less than three months in the organisation then they are not entitled to SSP. Also if they have already taken the 28 weeks off, or have taken off the time in 'linked periods' so it is becoming a pattern to when they are wanting sick pay.

Q26. What are the arrangements for notification of sickness in your organisation?

If I am sick in short notice then I can ring Rachael and arrange something, as either Rachael could fill in my day off ill or Vanessa.
If I was going to be off for a long period because of an illness then I would have to self certify my illness for four days and then after that I must show a doctors note. I would have to give plenty of notice for this so that my days working would be sorted out.

Q27. How much sick pay are you entitled to in your organisation?

I would get paid the Statutory sick pay which is £88.45 a week for up to 28 weeks.

Q28. Answer any three questions from the checklist on page 31.

1. Is sensitive personal data kept separate from other personal data?

Yes, because sensitive personal data could included things like mental health, trade union activities, details of criminal offences and many other details about someone, such information shouldn't be kept on laptops or portable storage devices as it could easily be accessed unless encrypted, so this sensitive data is kept in filing cabinets which are locked.

3. If I'm asked to pass on personal information, would the people about whom I hold information expect me do this?

No, personal information shouldn't be passed on to others unless you have someone's permission to do so and only if they are fully aware of it, so if I was going to pass on personal information then they would be aware of me doing this and would then expect me to do it after I have asked them.

Access to work

Overall you can pretty much find any topic on this website and it is available for anyone to access.

Q38. What are the main changes that have taken place in your area of business over the last few years?

1. Heirlooms ever after is an ever changing business as it is in the bridal industry which is changing none stop. Firstly, the business manufactures its own products and so the designs over the years have changed with what the latest trends are. This then means that the business is always looking for inspiration and ideas to help improve current products and in designing new products.

2. The social media pages have grown as a result to technology growing and more people using it. So the business website has been re-done to look more modern and we have almost all of the social media platforms now to connect with customers and other businesses.

3. From being just an online shop, the business opened a shop in Bakewell so that customers could come and see the products for themselves and opening business to the locals of the area.

Q39. An example of  how the changes in Q38 have affected roles in your organisation.

Overall the roles of each employee hasn't changed too much. Vanessa still is in charge of designing and manufacturing products that are bespoke for brides, but she also works some days in the shop and is doing more in the retail area. Rachael is still the director and is in charge of managing the business' online work, maintaining the website and social medias. But now is also helping myself with my apprenticeship and is teaching me things she knows about how social media works for the business and doing work on the website.

Unit 202

Unit 202 Imaging Software

Task 202.1.1 Describe what images are needed

Image 1. YouTube and Google plus profile pictures
I decided to resize the logo for Heirlooms Ever After, because it is a bitmap image I used ipiccy to edit it, I changed the width and height of the original image as you can see below to 250x250 so it would be the perfect size for a YouTube profile picture and google plus profile picture. Making it the required size makes it easier to upload to be your profile picture and it saves memory on your computer as it isn't necessarily too big of a file for the purpose needed.

Image 2. Header for Twitter
I decided to re-create the banner for Heirlooms, still using the colour purple and logo but making it simpler and cleaner by making the background white instead of a purple design as the background. Using ipiccy I made a custom template so it was 1500x500, meaning it is already the perfect size for the Twitter header.

Image 3. Photo for Instagram
An Instagram post is 1080x1080mm so using ipiccy to edit the photograph as it is a bitmap image, I scaled the photo so it fitted in the template I created and changed the hues and saturation on the photo just so it looked more aesthetically pleasing, which is important on Instagram because it is all about the photo and how nice it looks. The photograph has a high resolution making it a good quality photo so even though when zoomed in a lot it still pixelates, it is still a very clear photograph.

Image 4. YouTube thumbnail
On YouTube it is normally the videos thumbnail that attracts people to watch the video, so making sure the thumbnail is eye-catching is vital. This can be done in many ways but I wanted mine to look professional and not in your face but still eye-catching. I chose three images with high resolution to catch peoples eyes. I made sure the template was the correct size at 1280x760 making it easy to upload onto YouTube and also not wasting space on my computers memory.

Image 5. Design for a-board display
For an a-board you need the quality of the image to be good as it is going to be printed out. So this is a vector graphic which when you zoom in there aren't little squares, as they are objects instead which when scaled up don't go blurry. I used inkscape to make this as it is perfect for creating and editing vector images.

Image 6. Design for flyer
Vector images are ideal for when you want to print something off, as they will not loose the high resolution that is required for a print out. I used Inkscape to make the flyer and used vector shapes to make the boarder for the logo. The size is set to A5 (148x210mm) so it won't need resizing when printed off. I kept it very clean and simple and only included the necessary details on the flyer. But as you can see compared to raster images, when you zoom in on vector images it doesn't pixelate.

Task 202. 1.2 Obtain, input and prepare images to meet needs

When making the Etsy online shop for Heirlooms, I took all the photos myself, edited all the photos and uploaded them all. This meant I had to make sure I had all the correct settings and sizes so that the images would be the best fit and quality for their purpose.
So the image is 3000x4000 making it a large image with high quality, Etsy can take this size image and it didn't need resizing or adjusting, but this did make the size of the file 5.9MB. The image is 72dpi as it isn't an image that is going to be printed off and the colour mode is RGB again as this is an image online that isn't being printed off.
To edit this image I used ipiccy as it is a RASTER image, so I added shadows and light to make the picture more refined.

Task 202. 1.3 Describe what copyright and other constraints apply to the use of images

When using images you must always check whether they are legal to use in your business and even for you personal use sometimes. A way you can get around it is taking your own photographs because then you are the legal copyright owner of what you have created. But if you want images off of google then you can use the tool on finding images with the usage rights that allow to use them.

The meanings of:

Copy right is having control over your piece of work and deciding how others can use your work, if at all, and having control over selling of your work.

Data protection is what controls how everyone's personal information is used and your rights on knowing how your personal data is being used on the internet.

Intellectual property is someone's ideas, creations and work that are property of their copyright or trademark that others cannot copy the idea of the piece of work.

Creative commons is an organisation that encourages/helps increase the range of images available legally for people to use.

Overall when using others work always make sure you have their permission, and if it is legal to use their images make sure to acknowledge their work in mentioning their name or business, as this gives credit to them which they deserve, as you want to avoid plagiarism and saying the work is your own when it is not.

Task 202. 1.5 Describe the context in which the images will be used

The wedding photos in which are seen above would be used for online purposes as they are RASTER images (photographs) which have a set amount of pixels in the width of the photo, so the pixels stretch when scaled up, overall making the image blurry. So you could put these images on your website but they wouldn't be good for printing out.
Overall the purpose of the wedding dress photos is to show people what the dress looks like and if you used a camera with high resolution then you could print off the photos and put them into a glossy brochure.

Task 202. 1.6 Describe what file format to use for saving images to suit different presentation methods

.JPG images
It stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group
This file format is commonly used for high resolution photographs, complex images and online use. As it is a RASTER type of image, when scaled up it will loose its quality, also making it not good for printing out.

.PNG images
It stands for Portable Network Graphics
Used for transferring images online and like a jpg file it is not ideal for printing as it will loose the quality when scaled up larger than it is originally. It is another file that you could use instead of a gif file.

.GIF images
It stands for Graphics Interchange Format
It is a similar file format to png but has a lower quality image. It is used primarily for online use, as it allows animation on images which can have a transparent background too. Also it compresses the file so that it can be easily used online and support the moving image without taking up too much storage. It reduces the number of colours in your image to 256, this is a way it reduces the files size.

.PSD images
It stands for Adobe Photoshop
Photoshop is used for editing your photographs and also web design, as it has so many tools and techniques that you can use. When importing and exporting an image from Photoshop, you can only open up the file if you have Photoshop downloaded onto your desktop, narrowing down who you can share these images with.

.EPS images
It stands for Encapsulated Postscript File
Used to save vector images, for example logos for a business and other vector illustrations made by using shapes and not pixels, making it re-sizable to any size without loosing its quality. Furthermore this makes it that these files are perfect for printing off your image, even if the image is large it will still have great quality. Supports transparent background, perfect for using on websites, so it gives a clean look without borders as the pictures appear to be floating.

.PDF images
It stands for Portable Document Format
Used to import and export documents, while keeping the images quality as it is a vector file. It can be used to send digital copies of hard-copy images by email for example.

.AI images
It stands for Adobe Illustrator
This is a file that saves layered images and graphic designs. An example of this file format being used is for an original piece of work that a graphic designer would make for a businesses logo. Overall supporting vector images that are in the formats of EPS or PDF.

Task 202. 1.7 Store and retrieve files effectively, in line with local guidelines and conventions where available

After you have created an image or document it is always important that when saving you name the file a name that is relevant to the work, so that you can find the file again more easily. You can also organise your files into folders which allow you to place similar files all together.
Importing and exporting data can be easily done by just copy and pasting. You can also after saving your work, attach the file onto an email.
Version control is where you have a file that already exists, and you edit the document or image and when saving it, the computer adds a number or character to the existing file name so that you can tell the difference from the original file and the altered file.

Task 202. 2.1 Identify what technical factors affecting images need to be taken into account and how to do so

When creating a image, it is a good idea to set the canvas to the size that is required for the images purpose, so for example if you are making a image that will be used for Facebook cover photo, you would set the canvas to 851x315mm so that when uploading to Facebook it would except the image and you wouldn't have to crop any of the image out for it to fit.
Colour mode is another factor to take into consideration, if the image is going to be used for online purposes then the colour mode should be set to RGB, as this is what computers work with. However if you are creating a image that is going to be printed off then you should set the colour mode to CMYK as this is what printers use.
When saving your image the file size can be made smaller by having the canvas at the required size that is needed for its purpose, then this way you are not wasting unnecessary data by creating the image larger than what is needed. Also some file formats compress the files so that they are smaller for use online.
The difference between the resolution on screen and print is that screen resolution is 72dpi and print is 300dpi making it quite a difference as for print the resolution needs to be higher as the quality needs to be higher as it is a vector image.

Task 202. 2.2 Select and use suitable techniques to create images

There are so many different types of images that you can create using different tools. You can make simple shapes and text or you can create intricate images that are realistic.

Using Inkscape I used the star and circle tool to make simple shapes, and then filled them in with colour. I also used a paint brush that was in the same style as a calligraphy pen. And finally I used a text box to type in some text and changed the font and size to make it more aesthetically pleasing. All these techniques are very simple and can be achieved on most photo editing and painting software.

When editing a photo there are so many tools and techniques that you can use to make the image your desired look. Below is an example of editing a photograph on ipiccy. I changed the exposure which involved adding highlights and shadows and the colour contrast to make the image stand out more in certain areas, such as the face was made lighter and the edges of the photo darker, creating depth.

Task 202. 2.3 Use guidelines and dimensioning tools appropriately to enhance precision

When editing or creating images, various tools can help you achieve exactly what you want in a image. Here I am showing how to group images, use guidelines and changing other factors.

Above I have made two simple vector images, and I have decided to group them so that they become one image. You can do this by selecting both images and then right clicking and then simply selecting the group option as highlighted in the screen shot. You can also ungroup the images if you wanted by doing the same.
Changing colour and text options are easy to do by clicking on the shape and changing the colour and with the text you can click on the text and then all the options become available at the top of the screen.

If you want to rotate the image then you double click on the shapes and then two points will appear as you can see in the screenshot, you then use your mouse to rotate the image into whatever position you want.
If you wanted to flip the image then you can do this easily by clicking on the shape and then the options appear on the top right of the screen and you can choose the option flip, you can also rotate the picture this way too.
When resizing an image, you simply click on the image and then when the dotted lines appear with little boxes at the corners, you can use these to drag the shape into a smaller shape or a larger shape.

Above is examples of using filters on the shapes to create different effects making them a desired look. You can achieve this by clicking on the filters tab at the top and choosing which filter you want to add to your selected image.
Also shown above is how to use the layers, I have two layers on this simple example, but I wanted the smaller star to be on top of the larger star, so I clicked the smaller star, chose the layers tab and clicked 'move selection to layer above'.

Task 202. 2.4 Select and use appropriate tools and techniques to manipulate and edit for images

So when saving my image, I chose that I wanted to change the file format into a pdf so that I could email it to other people easily.

Before I saved the file, I made sure everything was correct like the dpi which was at 72dpi perfect for online use. And double checking that it was to be a pdf file.
